The Wajibati – Hajj and Umrah app helps pilgrims with vital information about the annual religious ritual right from their smartphones. Wajibati means “my duty” in Arabic.
Developed by 25 year old Tarek Al Zubair, the app features a step-by-step guide for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, providing them with emergency contacts, an online and offline map of Mecca, the Holy City and other useful features to make the time spent as hassle-free as possible.
AlZubair developed the app after a personal experince in the Holy City. He had lost his way trying to find a designated place to perform ritual washing preceding his prayers.
The app is currently available on the Google Play Store and reviews on the store from app users has shown how helpful the app is.
This year’s Hajj begins today September 9th and will end September 14th. More than 1.5 million pilgrims are expected to be at this year’s hajj in Mecca and had started arriving the city ahead of the annual pilgrimage.
As against the norm, high-tech advances are taking on more importance in this year’s hajj following last year’s stampede that resulted in the death of at least 769 people.
The government says pilgrims will be given water-resistant, electronic bracelets storing personal and medical information that will help authorities provide care and identify people.
The device will also be GPS enabled and will provide more information on prayer timings and assistance in participating in various rituals during the hajj.
Nearly a thousand surveillance cameras have also been installed at the Grand Mosque to monitor the crowd and ensure safety of the pilgrims.
