Artificial Intelligence, which was once celebrated primarily as a tool for boosting productivity and scientific discovery, is now becoming a weapon in modern conflict, espionage and cyber warfare.
This has raised fears among security experts that the technology could redefine how future wars are fought.

Governments, military organisations and non-state actors are already integrating AI into drones, cyberattacks, surveillance systems, misinformation campaigns and autonomous weapons, prompting warnings that global regulations are struggling to keep pace with the technology’s rapid advancement.
The concern has intensified following the growing use of AI-powered drones in conflicts across Ukraine and the Middle East, alongside increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks aided by generative AI.
Intelligence agencies have also warned that terrorist organisations are experimenting with commercially available AI tools to improve recruitment, planning and online propaganda.
Artificial intelligence is no longer just transforming businesses and powering consumer applications but also becoming a strategic weapon in modern warfare, cybercrime and information operations, as governments, militaries and criminal groups deploy AI to strengthen their capabilities.
The shift marks a new phase in global security where AI is being used not only to improve productivity but also to enhance military operations, automate cyberattacks, spread disinformation and power autonomous weapons.
What does this mean?
The weaponisation of AI refers to the use of artificial intelligence to improve or automate activities that can cause physical, digital or psychological harm.
Rather than replacing conventional weapons, AI is making existing weapons and military systems faster, more precise and more autonomous.
This means future conflicts may rely less on troop numbers and more on algorithms capable of identifying targets, analysing intelligence, directing drone swarms and launching cyberattacks within seconds.
Ways AI is changing warfare
Artificial Intelligence enables drones, robots and other military systems to identify, track and engage targets with varying degrees of autonomy, reducing the need for direct human intervention.
Generative AI is helping attackers produce convincing phishing emails, automate malware creation, analyse vulnerabilities and conduct cyber espionage more efficiently.

China is leading the military AI race
China has made artificial intelligence a cornerstone of its military modernisation under its doctrine of ‘intelligentised warfare.’
Beijing is integrating AI into autonomous drones, command systems, intelligence analysis, surveillance, electronic warfare and naval technologies through close collaboration between the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and civilian technology companies.
Analysts at the Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) said China considers AI a strategic technology capable of reshaping the global balance of military power, particularly in competition with the United States.
China’s rapid advances have accelerated defence AI investments by other countries, fuelling what many analysts describe as a global AI arms race.
Global concern
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said AI is being incorporated into military systems worldwide, while stressing that meaningful human control remains essential.
The World Economic Forum has identified AI-driven misinformation as one of the world’s most significant near-term risks, particularly during elections and geopolitical crises.
Cybersecurity firms including Microsoft, Google-owned Mandiant and Check Point Research have documented how hackers are already using generative AI to make cyberattacks more sophisticated and scalable.
Implications for Nigeria
For Nigeria, the implications extend beyond conventional warfare. Security agencies have reported the use of commercial drones by terrorist and criminal groups.
As AI becomes more accessible, these drones could become more autonomous, harder to detect and more effective for surveillance or attacks.
AI also increases the risk of sophisticated cyberattacks against critical infrastructure, financial institutions and government agencies.
Deepfake technology could be used to impersonate public officials, spread false information during elections or incite unrest.
The growing availability of open-source AI models means even relatively small groups can access capabilities that were previously available only to advanced militaries or large technology companies.
Balancing innovation with security
Despite the risks, Artificial Intelligence is not inherently a weapon. The same technology driving breakthroughs in healthcare, education, agriculture and productivity can also be adapted for military or malicious purposes.
The challenge for governments is to maximise AI’s economic and social benefits while preventing its misuse. This will require stronger international rules governing military AI, improved cybersecurity, greater investment in AI governance and safeguards to ensure humans remain accountable for decisions involving the use of force.
As countries race to gain an edge in artificial intelligence, the defining issue is no longer if AI will reshape global security, but whether regulation can keep pace before the technology outpaces human control.
