OPPO drives growth of flash charge technology with new global alliances

OPPO Mobile, the fifth smartphone manufacturer in the world, has disclosed that it will license its Voltage Open Loop Multi-step Constant-Current Charging (VOOC) technology with industry partners around the world. The company has already signed patent license agreements with six smart chip and terminal manufacturers.

OPPO which recently unveiled its office in Lagos, Nigeria, made the license announcement when it held its SuperVOOC Flash Charge Open Day in Shanghai.

Fast charging is a standard feature on high-end smartphones that works to reduce the slow progress of battery technology by allowing them to be refilled more quickly. The VOOC has charging speed up to four times faster than the regular charger and eight times faster than charging a smartphone on a computer’s UBS port. In other words, a quick five-minute charge is enough to last up to two hours talk time.

OPPO has also included the SuperVOOC which is even more impressive as part of the licensing technologies. The company revealed the SuperVOOC fast charging technology at Mobile World Congress 2016, showcasing its prototype that was able to go from 0 to 100 per cent in just 15 minutes.

Unlike typical smartphone charges which operate at 5V and 1A/2A, the VOOC uses 5V and 4A which is equivalent to a total of 20W off the wall. This ensures OPPO VOOC-enabled smartphones can charge faster than usual. In barely 30 minutes, it can give 75 per cent charge for a 3,000mAH battery.

SuperVOOC on the other hand uses an all-new low-voltage pulse-charge system with a combination of 10V and 5A in its 50W charger, so it can fill up batteries at an insanely fast speed. It supports both microUSB and USB Type-C in line with the global standard.

“As the leader in flash charging, OPPO Mobile is dedicated to extending the advantages of VOOC Flash Charge to the whole industry,” says Yiren Shen, OPPO’s Global Vice President in a statement sent to BusinessDay. “OPPO Mobile is happy to work with its first licensing partners to collaboratively expand the VOCC Flash Charge ecosystem so that more users can enjoy the convenience brought by VOOC Flash Charge.”

VOOC Flash Charge has applied for more than 1,000 core patents worldwide and in addition to optimising existing schemes.

The company’s major goal in giving out the licenses is to enable the technology adapt to different charging scenarios. The six partnering manufacturers are expected to develop, produce and sell chips and accessories that support VOCC Flash Charge. In the future, OPPO will gradually expand its VOOC Flash Charge license so that partners can develop more innovative products and better serve consumers.
