Meta has started rolling out paid subscription plans for users of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp globally, signaling one of the company’s biggest shifts away from relying almost entirely on advertising revenue.
This move introduces premium plus plans across Meta’s social platforms, offering users additional features, customisation tools and advanced engagement options while keeping the basic versions of the apps free.
Under the rollout, Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus are expected to cost about $3.99 monthly each, while WhatsApp Plus will cost about $2.99 per month.
Meta is also preparing higher-tier subscriptions for artificial intelligence services under a broader Meta One umbrella.
For everyday users, the subscriptions signal a major change in how Meta’s platforms may operate in the future.
Instead of offering all features for free in exchange for advertising exposure, Meta is creating a tiered experience where some tools and capabilities will only be available to paying users.

Instagram users subscribing to the new service are expected to gain access to features such as anonymous story viewing, extended story visibility, custom profile styling, advanced audience controls and additional engagement insights.
Facebook Plus is expected to introduce similar personalisation and visibility tools aimed at boosting interaction and content reach.
WhatsApp Plus focuses more on messaging customisation, including extra pinned chats, premium stickers, custom themes and enhanced organization features.
Meta said the subscriptions are separate from Meta Verified, its existing paid verification service for creators and businesses. Instead, the new plans are designed for a broader audience that includes casual users, creators, businesses and heavy users of Meta’s platforms.
The company is also expanding paid access to its artificial intelligence tools. Two AI-focused plans which are Meta One Plus and Meta One Premium are being tested at monthly prices of $7.99 and $19.99 respectively.
These plans will provide higher AI usage limits, advanced image and video generation, and deeper reasoning capabilities across Meta’s ecosystem.
The subscriptions come as Meta increases spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure and searches for new sources of recurring revenue.
What does this mean for users?
For users, the biggest immediate impact may not be losing free access to Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp, but rather seeing a gradual divide between standard and premium experiences.
Basic messaging, posting and browsing will remain free, but advanced features could increasingly move behind paywalls.
Meta has not yet announced a full global timeline for all subscription features, saying it will continue testing different plans and bundles while gathering user feedback.
