Mastercard taps creators’ economy with $2.04m investment

Mastercard has announced a $2.04 million investment to boost the creators’ economy in partnership with Wowzi, an influencer marketing platform, and Masria Digital Payments (MDP).

According to a statement, the five-year collaboration aims to transform financial management for content creators by introducing innovative digital card solutions.

“The collaboration will leverage MDP’s expertise in digital payments to provide Wowzi’s content creators with a seamless and secure user experience, simplifying both online and offline transactions and offering a range of benefits specifically to the needs of content creators,” it read.

Mike Otieno, Co-founder and President of Wowzi, highlighted the importance of the initiative, stating that the partnership with Mastercard and MDP represents a pivotal moment in the company’s mission to empower the creators.

“Innovation is at the core of our values, and we recognize that the influencer and creator market is underserved when it comes to payment solutions,” Otieno said.

On how the partnership will impact the gig economy in the creator space, Shehryar Ali, Senior Vice President and Country Manager for East Africa and Indian Ocean Islands at Mastercard, said the company’s decision to invest in the influencer and content creation space is a testament to its belief in the transformative power of the gig economy.

“As the world of work continues to evolve, we are inspired by the incredible impact content creators have on global culture and the economy,” Ali added.
