Mainone expands cloud business in bid to tap growing market

Here are five highlights of Nigeria’s tech industry in 2021

Mainone is expanding its cloud business as part of plans to grow its size in the market that is seeing more adoption from different companies.

The company’s broadband business has lagged due to high right of way fees, insecurity across the country and low income which makes deployment in rural parts of the country unviable. Mainone remains a strong contender in the evolving data centre landscape in Nigeria and Africa.

The proximity of cloud servers to locations where requests are coming from is a major consideration for businesses. The closer these servers are to customers, the lower the latency which in turn improves the quality of services. This is why Microsoft and Amazon have multiple data centres across the world.

Mainone also has one of the largest data centres in Nigeria and West Africa and in 2019 it announced a new data centre project in Ghana.

However, the Mainone Global Cloud Connect solution is backed by Mainone’s private submarine cable and supports direct connections to Cloud services at speeds from 10 Mbps to 100 Gbps.

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased organisations’ need for cloud services.

A report by Canalys, a global technology analyst firm, showed that cloud infrastructure services spending grew 35 percent year-on-year in the first three months of 2021, hitting $41.8 billion. Big cloud providers like AWS continue to dominate, accounting for 32 percent of market share. Microsoft Azure is second at 19 percent and Google Cloud comes in second at 7 percent.

Africa is becoming an attractive market for cloud infrastructure providers because of the large number of small businesses that are yet to embrace cloud services. The cloud market on the market is valued at $1.7 billion and the public cloud in Africa is said to be growing 3 times faster than the global average.

The company said the Mainone Cloud Connect service ensures direct secure and reliable network connectivity between enterprise data centers or office locations and public cloud providers such as Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services.

Mainone also has a partnership with EquinixTelecity that grants the company direct access to other global providers such as Oracle and IBM thereby giving customers access to the services they need.

‘ Our Cloud Connect service enables businesses in Nigeria, Ghana, and Cote d’ivoire adapt to the rapid growth of cloud solutions equipped with alwayson, secure access to their cloud enabled applications. Businesses across the region are strategically positioned to use our world class connectivity platform coupled with technology from our global partners to support their digital transformation efforts” Ololade Shonubi DGM Marketing and Customer Experience, said.

With Mainone Cloud Connect, businesses have a cost-effective solution to scale up as cloud resource utilization increases while benefiting from an improved network experience than Internet-based connections.
