Apple’s scheduled update for the iOS 11 this Tuesday will on one hand offer users an array of new features and enhancements, and at the same time, may cause some apps to stop working with the removal of support for 32-bit apps.
In essence, many of the existing apps on the iPhone or iPad won’t work if iOS 11 is installed, unless developers upgrade their apps for compatibility.
To check if your existing apps are not compatible with iOS 11, go to Settings > General > About > Applications. There you will see a list of applications that are not going to survive the transition; at least not unless their developers decide to fix compatibility issues in a future update. However, if there aren’t any apps showing, then it means all apps are up to date and compatible with iOS 11.
It should be noted that iOS 11 won’t purge incompatible apps from your devices, instead they won’t launch — unless/until they get an update fix.
iOS 11 will be available on the recently unveiled iPhones (8, 8s and X), and it will be compatible with the following models of iPhone, iPad and iPod.
iPhone: 5s, 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, SE, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, X
iPad: 5th generation (2017); Mini 2, 3 and 4; all Air models and all Pro Models
iPod Touch: 6th generation (2015)
Unfortunately, iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c will not be able to get iOS 11. Apple is also dropping support for the 2012 iPad 4.
Key features in iOS 11 will include a redesigned control centre, the ability to screen record, and later the ability to make payments to friends in iMessage via Apple Pay. iOS 11 is also introducing a Do Not Disturb while Driving mode, which is aimed at removing the temptation for motorists to look at their iPhone when behind the wheel.
