Generative AI interest lags in Nigeria compared to peers

‘Nigerians most trusting of generative AI tools’

A news report indicates that Nigeria has lower search interest in generative artificial intelligence (AI) compared to its counterparts such as Mauritius, South Africa, Namibia, and other countries.

The report, titled “Mapped: Interest in Generative AI by Country” shows that to determine interest in different generative AI technologies by country, ElectronicsHub, a research platform on tech, first determined the top 10 tools in each category in Gen AI in image, text, audio, and video based on their global monthly search volumes.

Monthly Google search volumes for each tool were recorded, combined with the overall volumes of each country, and scaled by population (per 100,000 people) and Google’s search engine market share in each respective market.

Compared to other African countries that have a high interest in Gen AI, Mauritius takes the lead with 1,1156 searches, followed by South Africa with 438, Namibia with 320, Botswana with 310, and Kenya with 221.

Aside from African peers, the highest search volume for generative AI tools was seen in the Philippines (5,288) followed by Singapore (3,036) and Canada (2,213).

The report stated “Artificial intelligence is taking the world by storm, with Goldman Sachs research indicating that the new technology could contribute to a 7% increase in global GDP by 2033. The widespread adoption of AI in generating text, images, audio, and video is evident, as millions of individuals worldwide are now utilizing tools such as ChatGPT and Midjourney to actualize their ideas. This surge in AI utilization has led to substantial investments amounting to billions of dollars.”

Statista, a global data platform indicates that the Generative AI market is anticipated to attain a market size of $162.40 million in 2023, showcasing an annual growth rate (CAGR 2023-2030) of 26.39%. This trajectory is expected to culminate in a market volume of $836.70 million by the year 2030.

The report also revealed that similar to the transformative impact of the printing press on information dissemination, generative AI is revolutionising the production and utilisation of information.
