Flutterwave wins Best Fintech startup at AppsAfrica awards

Nigerian-owned fintech startup, Flutterwave was among the ten big winners at the AppsAfrica Innovation Awards that held recently in Cape Town, South Africa.

 

The company beat competition to emerge the winner in the Fintech category. The winning startups in other categories were Flare which won the Best Social and Messaging Award category; Snapplify (Educational award); What3Words (Enterprise Solution Award and Disruptive Innovation Award); Vodacom e-School (Social Impact Award); Boomplay Music (Best African App); Mazady (mCommerce); Jumo (Changing Africa); and Bounce News (News and Entertainment Award).

 

In a statement, Andrew Fassnidge, founder of AppsAfrica.com, disclosed that the award which is in its third year, was created to “Celebrate the best in mobile and tech across the (African) continent and it is fantastic to see the growth each year, with entries from over 31 countries this year. Even more encouraging is how rapidly African startups are now scaling to compete with established corporate.”

 

Flutterwave is a San Francisco based fintech firm founded by Iyin Aboyeji. Recently the company signed a partnership with London-based money transfer firm, TransferWise and US-based Paypal. Its technical support to TransferWise will enable Nigerians living abroad make money transfers from pound to naira at 20 percent cheaper rate. With Paypal the company now enables over 200 million Paypal users from around the world to businesses using Flutterwave’s payment platform, Rave.

 

By winning the AppsAfrica Fintech award, Flutterwave joins the startups that will be invited to exhibit at Africa Tech Summit, taking place in Kigali, Rwanda, from February 14th and 15th, 2018.
