Facebook to make feeds more personal with new tech

Facebook wants to make feeds more personal with its advanced recommendation technology by 2026.

“By the end of 2026, our goal is to have the world’s best recommendation technology,” said Tom Alison, Head of Facebook, in a “Future of Facebook” update while sharing its vision and strategy.

This is coming as an offshoot of the global firm’s new Artificial Intelligence (AI) strategy to improve recommendations further.

“We upgraded our Reels and Feed ranking technologies to more effectively deliver recommendations. We invented a new model architecture – that can learn from large datasets very efficiently – which drove significant improvements in our pilot with Facebook Reels.”

He added, “Over the next year or so, this advanced recommendations technology will power more products, including our entire video ecosystem and our Feed recommendations.”

The tech giant recently celebrated its 20th anniversary and laid out its plan for the next 20. It emphasised how recommendation technology and an increased focus on young adults will contribute to its future.

“Facebook is still for everyone, but to build for the next generation of social media consumers, we’ve made significant changes with young adults in mind,” Alison said.

According to reports, the social app hosts over 40 million young adults (ages 18-29) in the United States and Canada who are active daily users. In Nigeria, young adults make up approximately 40 million daily active users in the age range.

Meta further highlighted the tech it has implemented to detect AI-generated content on its platform. “We’ve been working with industry partners to align on common technical standards that signal when a piece of content has been created using AI. Being able to detect these signals will make it possible for us to label AI-generated images that users post to Facebook, Instagram, and Threads,” the firm said.

The firm also noted that it is building a new collection of open models, tools, and resources for its Generative AI, Meta Llama.

“In addition, we’re also building one of the world’s best collections of open models, tools, and resources for generative AI with Meta Llama. Generative AI creates even more opportunities for social discovery on Facebook by helping you go deeper into the things you find,” the firm added.
