Airtel Nigeria has launched a new Smartphone Financing Programme aimed at accelerating the country’s transition to 4G and expanding digital inclusion for millions of underserved users still stuck on 2G and 3G devices.
The initiative, unveiled in Lagos, will allow eligible Airtel subscribers to acquire new 4G smartphones through a flexible financing structure that eliminates the burden of full upfront payment. The programme kicks off with the Itel A50, a budget-friendly device optimised for fast connectivity and improved user experience.
Dinesh Balsingh, chief executive officer of Airtel Nigeria, said the scheme underscores Airtel’s commitment to closing Nigeria’s digital gap by making modern devices more accessible.
“Connectivity is opportunity, and smartphones are the key that unlocks it. Through this programme, we are enabling more Nigerians to access 4G technologies and enjoy the benefits of digital inclusion without financial strain. This is about empowerment and building a truly connected future,” he said.

To qualify, subscribers must have been active on the Airtel network for at least three months. Approved users will receive the device upon making a down payment of N19,000 or N21,000, depending on their financing profile.
All repayments, including the initial deposit and weekly instalments, will be made exclusively through SmartCash, Airtel’s mobile money subsidiary. The company is leveraging intelligent credit scoring and partnerships with device financing firm Intelligra to verify eligibility and manage risk.
Ismail Adeshina, Airtel’s director of marketing, said the programme is designed to democratise access to technology. “By removing financial barriers, we are enabling more Nigerians to own quality smartphones. This supports digital growth and ensures no one is left behind,” he said.
