Airtel emerges fastest growing mobile operator in Nigeria

Airtel’s Smartcash offers users free transfers to all banks

According to the latest report published by the industry regulator, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Airtel Nigeria has emerged as the fastest-growing mobile operator in the country. According to the report published on the NCC’s corporate website this month, Airtel recorded the highest growth in new customers in the last quarter of 2014, clinching 32 per cent of total new customers between October and December 2014. The Nigerian telecoms industry recorded a total of 4, 766,511 (four million, seven hundred and sixty-six thousand, five hundred and eleven) new customers in the last quarter (October to December 2014). While MTN, Etisalat and Globacom, the second national carrier, had 1,434,119, 1,222,363 and 607,736 new customers respectively, Airtel recorded 1,502,293 new customers, the highest from the pool, in the period.

In percentage terms, while Airtel finished the last quarter as the fastest growing mobile operator in Nigeria with 32 per cent of new customers market share, MTN, Etisalat and Globacom closed the quarter with 30 per cent, 26 per cent and 13 per cent respectively, in terms of new customers recorded in the period. Reacting to the report, Segun Ogunsanya, managing director and chief executive officer, thanked Nigerians for choosing the Airtel Network ahead of other operators, noting that Airtel has been consistent in its effort to create real value for customers in line with its vision of becoming the most loved brand in the daily lives of Nigerians.

“We are happy to be the network of the first choice for many Nigerians.  We will continue to invest in the quality and capacity of our network just as we will continue to create value through our innovative and exciting value propositions. We have also empowered many Nigerians in the last few months through our revolutionary CSR platform, Touching Lives.
