Van Dijk urges Liverpool to make Anfield a fortress in title run
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has called on both players and fans to turn Anfield into a “horrible” place for opponents as the Reds push for the Premier League title.
Liverpool Closing in on 20th League Title
With 11 games remaining, Liverpool sit 11 points clear at the top of the table following Sunday’s crucial 2-0 victory over defending champions Manchester City. Although second-placed Arsenal have a game in hand, Arne Slot’s men are in a commanding position to secure a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title.

Seven of Liverpool’s remaining league fixtures will be played at Anfield, a factor Van Dijk believes could be decisive in the title race. However, he acknowledged that anxiety crept into last week’s nervy 2-1 home win over Wolves, as well as recent dropped points against Everton and Aston Villa.
Van Dijk Rallies Fans to Create Intimidating Atmosphere
“I mentioned it after that (Wolves) game, that it’s pretty normal—humans, there could be some anxious feelings kicking in,” Van Dijk admitted.
“But I think it only helps us, and them (the fans), as well to make Anfield horrible for the opponent. Most of the time we have been doing that, and obviously the way we play helps with that as well.”
He continued: “So let’s make sure those seven (home games) are going to be amazing, as loud as possible. I don’t think we have to speak about it, because normally that is the case.”
Liverpool Fans Begin to Believe
Goals from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai sealed a landmark victory at the Etihad, Liverpool’s first league win at City in nearly a decade. The result was made even sweeter by Arsenal’s 2-0 loss to West Ham the previous day.
With the finish line in sight, Liverpool fans chanted “We’re going to win the league” in the closing stages at the Etihad, embracing the belief that their team could claim just their second Premier League title since 1990.
However, Van Dijk remains focused. “A couple of days ago, there was noise also about other things, and it could go the other way,” he warned.
“The result on Saturday and the result (against City) give the fans belief. But it’s down to us to just keep focusing on the game ahead of us. That’s what we do, and that’s what I told the boys as well.”
Focus Shifts to Newcastle Clash
Liverpool now turn their attention to Wednesday’s home clash against Newcastle, a match Van Dijk sees as another crucial test.
“It’s all about recovery now and being ready for Newcastle. It will be a big test again, and we need our fans to be in great shape.”
