Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has assured fans that Nigeria is fully prepared to retain the Unity Cup trophy ahead of Saturday’s highly anticipated final against Jamaica in London.

Both the Super Eagles and the Reggae Boyz advanced to the final with identical 2-0 victories over Zimbabwe and India, respectively.

The clash will mark the third meeting between the two nations in the history of the Afro-Caribbean mini-tournament, which celebrates football, music and culture in the British capital.

Nigeria, Jamaica Renew Growing Rivalry

Last year, the Super Eagles defeated Jamaica on penalties after an entertaining 2-2 draw at Brentford Stadium.

Moses Simon handed Nigeria an early lead before Kaheim Dixon responded almost immediately for the Reggae Boyz. Samuel Chukwueze restored Nigeria’s advantage early in the second half, but Jon Russell equalised again for the Caribbean side to force penalties.

Nigeria converted all five spot-kicks, while Jamaica’s Dwayne Atkinson missed his effort, blasting over the bar as Stanley Nwabali watched on.

New Faces Impress For Super Eagles

Although Simon and Chukwueze are absent from this year’s tournament, the Super Eagles produced an impressive display in Tuesday’s semifinal victory over Zimbabwe.

Debutant Femi Azeez stole the spotlight with a brilliant brace, further strengthening Chelle’s confidence in the new-look squad.

Jamaica also showed quality in their semifinal triumph over India, with Courtney Clarke opening the scoring before Kaheim Dixon added the second goal.

Chelle Confident Of Victory

Speaking ahead of the final, Chelle dismissed concerns about another possible penalty shootout, insisting his players are mentally prepared to defend the trophy by any means necessary.

“Penalties are part of the game, and they can decide who wins a match. Every time I go into a game, I have the mentality to win,” Chelle said.

“This is the culture I have put in these boys, the winning culture. I don’t know if Saturday’s game will end in penalties; what I know is that I have prepared my team to win.

“These are very young players with a bright future, and they are hungry for success at any level. So, on Saturday, we will see how the game is decided, but we surely have prepared to win and defend the Unity Cup.”
