Gareth Southgate has resigned as England manager two days after the Three Lions defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

The Three Lions lost 2-1 in Berlin on Sunday – their second consecutive Euros final defeat, having been beaten on penalties by Italy at Wembley three years ago.

Southgate managed his country for 102 games in eight years in charge. His contract was set to expire later this year.

The Football Association (FA) had hoped he would extend his contract after he led the team to the final of Euro 2024, but on Tuesday, Southgate announced that he has decided to seek a new challenge.

“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” Southgate said. “It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change and a new chapter.

“Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager,’ thanking the fans, Southgate continued. “We have the best fans in the world, and their support has meant the world to me. I’m an England fan and I always will be.

I look forward to watching and celebrating as the players go on to create more special memories and to connect and inspire the nation as we know they can.

“Thank you, England – for everything.” The 53-year-old managed 102 matches, achieving 61 wins and only 17 losses during his tenure.

He also became the first manager to lead England’s men to two major tournament finals. However, losses to Italy in 2021 and Luis de la Fuente’s impressive Spanish team in Berlin on Sunday left Southgate without a trophy despite his record-breaking leadership.

Southgate ranks third for all-time victories as England manager – and only two previous England managers have taken charge of more matches than him.
