Akure, the Ondo State capital, will come alive on May 16 and 17 as 12 teams from Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti states compete in the South West 3×3 Basketball Challenge organised by the South West Basketball Zone.
The championship, tagged the Asiwaju Renewed Hope South West 3×3 Basketball Challenge, will take place at Democracy Park, Oja Oba, Akure.
Speaking ahead of the tournament sponsored by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the South West representative on the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Olumide Oyedeji, described the event as another platform for players in the region to experience competitive basketball.
Oyedeji explained that the decision to adopt the 3×3 format was driven by the growing global popularity of the game and the need to discover and develop talents within the South West zone.
Beyond the millions of naira in prize money at stake, he revealed that all participating teams would be provided accommodation, feeding, jerseys and transportation support.
He also praised Tunji-Ojo for supporting the initiative and assured fans that the two-day championship would offer more than basketball, with top-level entertainment and networking opportunities for stakeholders across the region in an atmosphere of camaraderie.
