Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has criticised Marcus Rashford, accusing the forward of letting his teammates down and should be banished from the dressing room.
The 27-year-old England international has been out of favour under manager Ruben Amorim, who has excluded him from all but one squad since December 12, in which Rashford was an unused substitute. Amorim recently made a scathing remark, stating he would prefer having 63-year-old goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital in his squad over Rashford, citing the player’s perceived lack of effort.
Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Scholes, a Manchester United midfielder with 11 Premier League titles, was unequivocal in his critique. “Marcus has let a lot of people down with his attitude, and I think that’s what the manager is trying to say,” he said.
Scholes pointed to Rashford’s influence on younger players like Alejandro Garnacho. “He’s 27 years of age, and he’s clearly not training properly. If young players are looking up to him, that’s not a good example. He should be banished from the dressing room. The sooner he’s gone, the better.”
Scholes compared Rashford’s current situation to a lesson he learned under Sir Alex Ferguson. “I remember telling the manager I didn’t want to play a game, and he told me, ‘The worst thing you did is let your teammates down.’ That really stuck with me, and I think Rashford is doing the same in his own way by not putting in the effort.”
Scholes’ comments echo those of former United defender Rio Ferdinand, who declared on his podcast that there was “no way back” for Rashford after Amorim’s harsh criticism.
Rashford, who publicly stated in December that he was ready for a “new challenge,” has been linked with potential moves to Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, and AC Milan during the January transfer window. However, his reported £300,000-a-week ($374,000) salary and contract running until 2028 could complicate any transfer.
Having scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for United, Rashford’s future remains uncertain as the January window progresses.
