Former President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has supported the appointment of Eric Chelle as the head coach of the Super Eagles, despite the mixed reactions it has sparked among Nigerians.
Addressing the criticism, Pinnick condemned those opposing Chelle‘s appointment for focusing on his race rather than his credentials.
“I got calls from a lot of people immediately after he was announced. I just shook my head because, before now, I had already done my research on Eric, and I realised a lot of people don’t know him,” Pinnick stated. “They are basing their arguments on the colour of his skin, not his content, deliverables, or what he aims to achieve.”

Highlighting Chelle’s coaching record, Pinnick noted: “He’s got an impressive record. When he was with Mali, their performance over the last two years was consistent in quality. Out of 22 games, he won 14, drew four, and lost just three, which shows that he is an offensive-minded coach. Nigeria, traditionally, is an offensive team, and that has prepared him for the challenges ahead.”
Pinnick also emphasised the comprehensive support system Chelle is bringing to the Super Eagles. “He is not just a coach; he is coming with a retinue of backroom staff—a set-piece specialist, a match analyst, and, I was told, a goalkeepers’ coach. He will also be supported by backroom staff provided by the NFF. He is the leader who will harmonise their efforts to ensure we qualify for the 2026 World Cup,” he explained.
Admitting the challenges ahead, Pinnick cautioned: “It’s going to be a tough challenge. I won’t tell you it will be easy; it will be very, very tough. But I believe he is well-prepared for it. He’s got the record, and I believe we should trust him. Let’s focus on his content, not his colour, and evaluate what he brings to the table.”
Pinnick’s remarks come amid rising debates about Chelle’s appointment, as many await to see how the Malian tactician will shape the future of Nigerian football.
