The head coach of Enyimba Football Club, Finidi George, has insisted that his team will continue to push for the 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title till the end of the season.
The 53-year-old former international disclosed this after the Peoples’ Elephant played a 1-1 draw against Sunshine Stars of Akure in their match day 31 of the NPFL fixture on Sunday.
Enyimba FC are currently in second position in the NPFL standing, two points behind table leaders Enugu Rangers.
Chidiebere Nnachi’s second-half equalizer ensured that the nine-time NPFL champions stayed within distance of league leaders, Enugu Rangers who lost 0-2 to Rivers United in Port Harcourt.
Speaking after the match, Finidi stated that a draw was good for both teams, noting that it was a 50-50 game.
“Yes, it was a difficult one, let’s say the game was 50-50, so I think a draw is good enough for both teams,” the former Ajax star said after the match.
“They wanted to win, we wanted to get something out of this game. I think you didn’t see lots of chances but overall a draw is well needed by both teams.”
When asked if Enyimba FC has a chance to retain their NPFL title with seven matches left, Finidi said the People’s Elephant will build on the away point obtained from the Owena Boys in Akure and continue to push to retain the NPFL cup.
“I think so, after having this one point here, I think we would build on it and see how we can win at home.
“We will continue to push till the end of the season, Enyimba, we don’t give up, so we’ll see what happens, others are playing also to see how they can win, I think this one point will go a long way.”
The 2023/24 NPFL season is expected to end by May.
