Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Arne Slot following Liverpool’s decision to part ways with the Dutchman on Saturday.

Iraola’s chances have been boosted by his previous working relationship with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, who played a key role in bringing the Spaniard to Bournemouth before moving to Anfield in 2024.

The 43-year-old Dutchman took charge of his final match as Bournemouth head coach on Sunday, overseeing a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest that secured a sixth-place Premier League finish and the club’s first-ever qualification for the UEFA Europa League.

Liverpool Move Quickly

Liverpool are keen to appoint a successor swiftly, and Iraola’s availability has made him an attractive option for the Merseyside club.

The Spaniard has also attracted interest from AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen and Crystal Palace, but has yet to commit to his next managerial role.

Iraola has been one of the most sought-after coaches in Europe following Bournemouth’s impressive performances under his leadership.

Impressive Bournemouth Spell

Iraola joined Bournemouth from Spanish side Rayo Vallecano in the summer of 2023 on an initial two-year contract.

In his first season, he guided the Cherries to a 12th-place finish in the Premier League, prompting the club to extend his contract by an additional two years.

He followed that with an even stronger campaign, leading Bournemouth to sixth place and European qualification while earning widespread praise for his high-intensity, attacking style of football.

The South Coast club finished the season on an 18-match unbeaten run to secure their historic place in Europe.

Bournemouth Respect Decision

Bournemouth sources have indicated that while the club are disappointed to lose Iraola, they respect his decision and maintain a strong relationship with the Spaniard.

The club reportedly spent 15 months trying to persuade him to remain at the Vitality Stadium and explored every possible avenue to keep him.

Former Borussia Dortmund manager Marco Rose has already been appointed as Iraola’s successor on a three-year contract.

Competition For His Signature

Iraola has been linked with several high-profile vacancies in recent months.

Crystal Palace were among the clubs monitoring his situation following Oliver Glasner’s departure, while Chelsea and Manchester United were also previously credited with interest before appointing Xabi Alonso and Michael Carrick, respectively.

With Liverpool now searching for a new manager and eager to make a quick appointment, Iraola appears to be firmly at the top of the club’s shortlist.
