Iran have been granted permission to enter the United States two days before their final FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage match against Egypt, easing previous travel restrictions imposed on the team.
The move comes after Iranian officials raised concerns with FIFA over regulations that required the squad to arrive at match venues in the United States less than 24 hours before kick-off and depart almost immediately after games.
US Eases Travel Restrictions
Under the revised arrangement, Iran will be allowed to travel to Seattle on Wednesday ahead of Friday’s Group G encounter with Egypt. The US Department of Homeland Security confirmed the decision on Tuesday.
“For the Iranian team’s third match in Seattle on June 26, the team has been permitted to come into the US two days before the match,” a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said.
“The Iran team will still be required to leave the day the match ends. The overall security measures and protocol are the same. We remain committed to providing the safest tournament possible for players, staff and fans alike.”
Challenges During the Tournament
Throughout the tournament, Iran have been based in Tijuana, Mexico, commuting to the United States for matches because of restrictions on their stay in the country. Several members of the team’s staff and delegation have also been barred from entering the US.
Iran’s first two World Cup matches were played in Inglewood, California, with the squad required to travel to and from the venue within a 24-hour period.
US authorities said the team’s travel arrangements would continue to be reviewed as discussions over further easing of restrictions remain ongoing.
Message of Gratitude and Unity
Following their matches in Los Angeles, Iran’s football federation released a handwritten message expressing gratitude to the host city and its supporters.
“From the ancient Persia of thousands of years ago to the well-mannered Iran of today, the spirit of Iran remains alive and steadfast,” the statement read.
“Thank you, Los Angeles, for your hospitality.
“We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honour, and leave with dignity.”
The federation also thanked Iranian supporters for giving their “heart, voice and soul” to the team during the tournament and concluded with a call for peace, respect and friendship among all nations.
