The wife of Arsenal forward Kai Havertz, Sophia Havertz, has revealed “shocking” abuse she received on social media, including threats to the couple’s unborn child, following the Gunners’ FA Cup defeat to Manchester United.
Havertz missed a crucial penalty in Arsenal’s shootout loss at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. Shortly after the match, Sophia—who is expecting her first child with the German international—shared screenshots of the hateful messages she received via Instagram.
One message, which Sophia reposted to her 500,000 followers, prompted her to write: “For anyone to think it’s okay to write something like this is so shocking to me. I hope you are so ashamed of yourself.”
Addressing another vile message, she added: “I’m not sure what to even say but please, guys, be more respectful. We are better than this.”
Arsenal have condemned the abuse and reported it to the police. The club is also working with a specialist data firm to identify the perpetrators.
