Clinton Opute, Team Delta’s leading gold medallist in the men’s swimming event at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF), tagged Gateway Games 2024, has set his sights on winning more medals, despite already shattering three of his records in Abeokuta.

The swimming sensation first rewrote history in the men’s 200m butterfly, clocking 2:10.6 to beat his previous record of 2:13.3 seconds.

Opute also smashed the 400m freestyle record, lowering the time from 4:29.05 seconds to 4:14.27 seconds, and set a new mark in the 200m individual medley, improving on the old 2:16.06 seconds by finishing in 2:14.27 seconds.

Despite claiming six gold medals and a silver so far, the composed swimmer says his hunger for more glory remains undiminished.

“My aim is to win more gold medals for Team Delta and help us retain our National Sports Festival title,” Opute said.

He expressed hope that his contributions would play a crucial role in Team Delta’s bid to remain overall champions.

In women’s football, Team Delta secured a spot in the semi-finals after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Team Lagos, advancing from Group B alongside the National U-17 women’s team. They will face either the host team, Team Ogun, or Team Osun in the next round.

Meanwhile, Team Delta’s female Abula squad also reached the semi-finals, defeating Team Oyo in straight sets. The team now has its sights firmly set on winning the gold medal in the event.
