Fernandes explains Rashford penalty decision against Everton

Manchester United knock Liverpool out of FA Cup

A late minute goal from Bruno Fernandes was enough to send Liverpool out of FA Cup on Sunday night.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has explained why he handed the penalty responsibilities to Marcus Rashford, during the Red Devils’ 3-0 win over Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.

Fernandes, who usually takes the spot-kicks, handed the ball to Rashford to give him a chance to score his second Premier League goal and boost his confidence.

The 26-year-old striker, who scored 17 Premier League goals last season, has struggled to find his form and has only managed two goals in 12 league appearances for Man United this campaign.

Rashford stepped up to confidently score the penalty after former Red Devils captain Ashley Young brought Anthony Martial down inside the box.

The 29-year-old Portugal international opted to pass the ball over to Marcus on Merseyside, who made no mistake from twelve yards.

In his post-match, Bruno said he allowed Rashford to take the penalty to re-ignite his confidence.

“I did it because I felt Marcus Rashford needed a little bit of confidence; he needed his goal,” Bruno told Sky Sports.

“Marcus is an excellent penalty taker too; I am 100% sure he could score that penalty.

“It is not about who takes it, it is about scoring, and Marcus did it perfectly.”

Fans hope his strike can provide a huge boost as Man United face Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday and Newcastle on Saturday, December 2.

Fernandes believes the England international can replicate last season’s form when he netted 30 goals in all competitions.

“I think we all know strikers and wingers want to score goals; they need to score; that is part of their game,” added Fernandes.

“It gives you more of a boost, and as you saw after the goal, Marcus was unstoppable. He could take on everyone.

“Sometimes you need this opportunity to regain your confidence, and Marcus has been great for us. Last year, he was amazing, so, therefore, everyone’s expectations for this season have been a lot higher.

“It is just about getting his goals back and everyone saying he is world-class again.”
