El Clasico: Barcelona overtake Real Madrid in head-to-head record

El Clasico-record

El Clasico

In winning yet another El Clasico on Saturday night at the Santiago Bernabéu, Barcelona have now overtaken their arch rivals Real Madrid to become the most successful club in this particular fixture.

Barcelona last surpassed Madrid back in 1932, almost a century ago, and have been playing catch up ever since.

After Wednesday’s 3-0 win in the Copa Del Rey, Barcelona drew level with Madrid in number of victories in the head to head, with both teams then at 95 each. It was a monumental win considering it had been 87 years since the clubs were last level on that front.

The recent Copa Del Rey win for the Catalans took the tally of El Clasico wins to 95 each, and the win in La Liga made it 96 to the mighty Barcelona.

Historically, Real Madrid have dominated the fixture, but the last decade or so has belonged completely to the Blaugrana, who have bagged 11 Clasico victories.

Since Lionel Messi has joined the fray, the Clasico advantage has very much lay with Barcelona, who showed their dominance once again with back to back wins in the fixture.

There was not a whole lot to suggest that Los Blancos would be able to turn this around any time soon either, so expect more Barca dominance as we head into the next season and more El Clasico action awaits.

Real Madrid have been giving up the advantage they had ever more steadily in recent years, particularly due to their negative streak at home.

The two triumphs in a week do nothing but confirm the trend of recent years when the Blaugrana come to town, having won on each of their last four league visits.Barcelona have now won 31 times in the capital in Clasicos and proof of their dominance comes with 11 wins in the past decade.

The 6-2 win in 2009 was the start of it all and other highlights have come with the 2-0 Champions League semi-final win, the 4-3 thriller in 2012/13, the 4-0 win in 2015, the dramatic 3-2 success in 2016/17 and last season’s 3-0 victory.
