Edo Queens secure CAF Women’s Champions League spot

…Clinches WAFU B title

Nigerian champions, Edo Queens have secured a spot in this year’s CAF Women’s Champions League scheduled to take place later in the year.

The Nigerian side ensured their qualification for the Champions League after emerging winners of the WAFU B with two second-half goals to beat Benin’s Ainonvi FC 3-0 in the final played on Friday at the Stade de La Paix de Bouaké.

With this win, Edo Queens succeeded Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies as WAFU B champions and will go on to represent the region in the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League, where they will aim to continue their impressive form on the continental stage.

Suliat Abideen opened the scoring for Edo Queens just before the break, capitalising on their early control of the midfield to break through the Benin defence.

Edo Queens doubled their lead in the 59th minute through Emem Essien, who has been one of the standout players of the tournament.

Essien’s solo effort saw her easily bypass the Benin goalkeeper, Alassane Sauratou, from close range, showcasing her skill and composure.

The victory was sealed in the 76th minute when Ainonvi FC’s Elizabeth Ukandu inadvertently headed the ball into her own net under pressure from the relentless Edo Queens attack.

Despite creating several opportunities, Ainonvi FC was unable to break down the resolute Edo Queens defense, which held firm to maintain a clean sheet.
