Diego Simeone reaches record 500 LaLiga games with Atletico Madrid

Diego Simeone continues to etch his name in Atlético Madrid’s history, further solidifying his status as one of the greatest coaches in both the club and La Liga history.

Last Saturday, against RCD Mallorca at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium, the Argentine tactician reached a remarkable milestone—his 500th La Liga match in charge of Atlético Madrid.

Simeone now ranks as the ninth coach with the most games in the Spanish top flight, trailing only legendary figures such as Luis Aragonés, Javier Irureta, Miguel Muñoz, Víctor Fernández, Javier Clemente, Joaquín Caparrós, Ernesto Valverde, and Manuel Pellegrini.

Across all competitions, he has overseen 714 matches for Atlético de Madrid, making him the first manager in Spanish football history to reach this number with a single club.

Since taking the reins in December 2011 and making his debut in January 2012 against Málaga, Simeone has transformed Atlético Madrid into a European powerhouse.

His leadership has not only elevated the club’s competitive standing but has also brought sustained success on and off the pitch. Under his guidance, Atlético have secured eight major titles, further cementing their place among the elite.

His first triumph came in 2012 with a UEFA Europa League victory over Athletic Club (3-0), followed by the UEFA Super Cup win against Chelsea (4-1) that same summer.

In 2013, he led Atlético to Copa del Rey glory, defeating Real Madrid (2-1). His first La Liga title arrived in 2014, followed by the Spanish Super Cup victory against Real Madrid that same year.

Simeone later added a second Europa League title in 2018, another UEFA Super Cup in 2018, and a second La Liga title in 2021—this one played behind closed doors due to the pandemic.

With these accomplishments, he has become the most decorated coach in Atlético de Madrid’s 122-year history. His record in La Liga is extraordinary—500 games managed, with 306 wins, 112 draws, and just 82 defeats, while his team has scored 845 goals and conceded only 386.

This season, Atlético have continued their strong form, winning 14 matches, drawing six, and suffering just two defeats in the league.

Across all competitions (714 games), Simeone’s statistics are even more impressive: 426 wins, 154 draws, and only 134 defeats. This remarkable legacy continues to grow, with the next challenge being the ELDERBI DE MADRID against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium next Saturday, February 8th, at 21:00 (CET).
