CAF recovers stolen match ball from Algerian staff member at AFCON 2025

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has recovered a match ball reportedly taken by a member of the Algerian technical staff during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group E clash against Equatorial Guinea at the Stade Moulay Hassan in Morocco, according to Moroccan outlet Morocco World News.

Tournament observers have described the incident as unprofessional, adding an unusual off-field controversy to a day that otherwise saw Algeria secure a dominant 3–1 victory.

Caught on Camera

After the final whistle, CAF officials discovered that two of the 15 official match balls assigned to the fixture were missing. A review of stadium surveillance footage identified the source of the disappearance.

The footage showed a member of the Algerian technical delegation taking one of the balls during half-time and concealing it under his clothing before returning to the bench area.

CAF’s tournament coordinator immediately visited the Algerian dressing room to address the issue. Although there were initial denials, the ball was returned after officials presented clear video evidence.

One Ball Still Missing

While one of the missing balls has been recovered, CAF officials confirmed that a second ball remains unaccounted for. Organisers are continuing checks, including further review of footage, to determine how it went missing.

Reactions and Possible Sanctions

The episode has sparked criticism on social media, with fans and pundits questioning standards of conduct within the Algerian camp.

Tournament monitors warned that such behaviour undermines professionalism at major international competitions.

CAF is expected to review the incident, with possible disciplinary measures ranging from fines to the withdrawal of individual accreditation, though no official sanctions have yet been announced.

The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of the Algerian delegation at the tournament, following earlier reports of disputes involving sponsorship signage and accreditation.

Despite the off-field distraction, Algeria progressed to the Round of 16 to face DR Congo with a perfect group-stage record, although the controversy has cast a shadow over their on-field success.
