The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially updated its records to recognise Morocco as the winner of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with Senegal listed as runners-up.

The update follows a ruling by CAF’s Appeals Board on March 18, which overturned the on-field result of the January 18 final held in Rabat.

According to CAF, Morocco are now recorded as champions of the AFCON 2025 held in Morocco, while Nigeria retained third place.

The decision hands Morocco their second AFCON title, and first since 1976, with the final officially recorded as a 3-0 victory following Senegal’s forfeiture.

The match, played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, had ended in controversy after a series of contentious incidents.

In a statement, CAF said, “The Senegal National Team is declared to have forfeited the final match… with the result recorded as 3–0 in favour of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football.”

The ruling has sparked widespread debate, with critics arguing it undermines the integrity of results decided on the pitch.

The Senegalese Football Federation has condemned the decision as “unfair, unprecedented, and unacceptable”, noting it will escalate the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.
