Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been accused of aggressively confronting referee Michael Oliver, suggesting the official would be to blame if Liverpool failed to win the Premier League title.
Slot’s Heated Exchange with Oliver
Slot and his assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, were shown red cards after confronting Oliver following Liverpool’s fiery 2-2 draw against Everton in February.
The match saw James Tarkowski score a late equalizer, with Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure sent off after a post-match scuffle.
According to Oliver’s official match report, Slot allegedly told him:
“You’ve given them everything. I hope you’re proud of that performance.”
The referee also claimed Slot returned to continue the verbal attack, stating.
“If we don’t win the league, I’ll blame you.”
Slot’s Version and FA Sanctions
Slot admitted the charges but insisted his actual words were:
“If we don’t win the league, I will have you to thank for that.”
Despite this discrepancy, the FA upheld Oliver’s account and sanctioned Slot with a two-match touchline ban (one match already served) and a fine for his misconduct.
The FA emphasised that managers must uphold discipline, with the independent commission stating:
“Slot’s actions did not provide the positive image of the game that the governing bodies strive for.”
Slot Apologizes as Liverpool Push for the Title
The 46-year-old Dutchman has since apologised privately and publicly to Oliver, admitting frustration got the better of him.
Despite dropping points at Goodison Park, Liverpool remain 13 points clear of second-placed Arsenal as they chase a record-equalling 20th English title.
