Alvaro Arbeloa has delivered a firm message to his squad, insisting that Real Madrid’s values outweigh any individual amid scrutiny surrounding Kylian Mbappé’s recent travel during injury recovery.
Speaking after Madrid’s 2-0 win over Espanyol, Arbeloa addressed criticism of Mbappe, who travelled to Italy while rehabilitating a thigh injury.
While defending the forward’s right to personal time, the Madrid boss underlined the club’s long-standing principles of discipline and collective responsibility.
“Mbappe can do what he wants in his free time, like any other player,” Arbeloa said. “But Real Madrid is bigger than any individual.”
He stressed that the club’s medical staff remain in full control of players’ recovery schedules, dismissing suggestions of any internal issue while reinforcing the hierarchy at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Arbeloa also praised Vinícius Júnior, whose second-half brace secured the win and delayed FC Barcelona’s title celebrations.
“Vinícius was a constant threat and proved himself as a leader again,” he said, adding that the winger’s substitution was precautionary to avoid suspension ahead of the upcoming Clásico.
Vinícius struck in the 55th and 66th minutes at the RCDE Stadium, keeping Madrid mathematically in the title race, 11 points behind Barcelona with four games remaining.
Attention now turns to the decisive Clásico at Camp Nou on May 10, where Arbeloa insists strict adherence to the club’s ethos will be crucial.
“Real Madrid was built on talent and hard work. I want the players to understand that no one is above the institution,” he added.
With the season entering its final stretch, Arbeloa dismissed talk of any dressing-room rift, instead using the moment to reinforce the cultural standards expected at one of world football’s biggest clubs.
