Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has acknowledged that the latest wave of job cuts at Old Trafford is directly linked to the club’s struggles on the pitch.
The Premier League giants, who have endured five consecutive years of financial losses, announced on Monday that up to 200 staff members would be sacked as part of a “transformation plan” at stabilising the club. This follows last year’s layoff of 250 employees and other cost-cutting measures, including ticket price increases.
Amorim: Poor Results Have Contributed to Financial Woes
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday’s home clash against relegation-threatened Ipswich, Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November 2024, admitted that Manchester United’s lack of success has played a role in the club’s financial difficulties.
“That is clear. Of course, we have to address all the problems in the club. But one important piece of this moment is to understand how we got into this situation, and it has a lot to do with the lack of success on the football team because I think we are the engine of any football club.”
United’s poor form under Amorim has seen them slip to 15th in the Premier League table, with only four league wins since his arrival. The club’s last title challenge was under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, making their current plight all the more humiliating for fans.
Amorim Seeks to Lift Club Morale Amid Crisis
Despite United’s domestic struggles, the Europa League and FA Cup remain potential sources of optimism. Amorim emphasized the importance of turning things around to ease tensions within the club.
“It’s been really hard for everybody. We’ve made a lot of changes, but when you’re doing that, it helps if the football team is winning games. Right now, we are struggling both on and off the pitch, so we have to fight against this feeling and do our job. We are trying our best to help the team perform better.”
Amorim faces an uphill battle to restore confidence in his squad and stabilise the club during one of its most challenging periods in recent history.
