Tobi Amusan secured Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing African Athletics Championships with a podium finish in the women’s 100m hurdles final in Accra, Ghana, on Wednesday.

The reigning world record holder delivered another commanding performance to reaffirm her dominance on the continent after earlier qualifying fastest from the heats with a time of 12.82 seconds.

Amusan outclassed the field in the final to claim the gold medal on Day Two of the championships, adding another continental title to her impressive career achievements.

Nigeria also celebrated another podium finish in the event as Adaobi Tabugbo won bronze, securing her first individual medal for the country at a major championship.

The result continued Team Nigeria’s strong start to the championships in Ghana.

Team Nigeria had opened its medal account on Tuesday through the women’s discus throw event.

Divine Oladipo won silver, while Obiageri Amaechi claimed bronze in the competition.

With the sprint hurdles secured, Nigeria now looks to build further momentum. All eyes shift to the women’s 100m final, where Rosemary Chukwuma and Miracle Ezechukwu are tipped as favourites to add to the nation’s growing gold count.
