The president of the Cameroon Football Federation, Samuel Eto’o, was in tears after the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon clinched their place in the Round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Tuesday night.
Cameroon fought back with two goals in the last five minutes to beat Gambia 3-2 to qualify for the knockout stage of the tournament as runners-up in Group C.
Emotional Eto’o who is Cameroon’s all-time leading scorer with 56 goals was relieved as he joined the celebrations in the dressing room after the final whistle.
In a video clip post on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) official X account, Eto’o joined the jubilation in the dressing room where he danced and hugged the players and the coaching staff following their 3-2 win over Gambia in their final Group C fixtures.

Eto’o won two AFCONs with Cameroon in 2000 and 2002, was the joint top scorer in the 2006 edition and clinched the Golden Boot in the 2008 AFCON.
And Eto’o, who won 118 caps for Cameroon was emotional with Cameroon’s comeback and will now face Nigeria in the Round of 16.
The Super Eagles finished second in Group A behind Equatorial Guinea.
Nigeria defeated Cameroon 3-2 the last time both countries played each other at the same stage in 2019 in Egypt.
