The 2014/15 Premier League season is upon us and day one brought shocks in the shape of Manchester United’s defeat to Swansea City, whilst title hopefuls Arsenal put their first three points on the board.
The Premier League is one of the biggest leagues in world sport, so it is no surprise that there are some eye-watering figures amongst the league’s highest paid players. These are the ten biggest earners currently, with figures courtesy of Purely Football.
1. Wayne Rooney, Manchester United – £300,000-a-week
One of David Moyes’ biggest decisions during his brief time as United boss was sanctioning the deal to make Rooney the highest paid player in the country with a colossal new pay packet.
2 Yaya Toure, £200k-a-week
Manchester City Midfielder Yaya Toure is still perhaps the biggest marquee signing to have been made by Manchester City, with the Ivorian earning £200k a week at Eastlands and ranking 2nd on this list.
3 Robin van Persie, Manchester United – £200,000-a-week
Much is expected of this Netherlands international following the arrival of his fellow countryman Louis van Gaal as manager, with United looking to rediscover their winning form.
4 Eden Hazard, Chelsea – £185,000-a-week
Chelsea had to beat off a host of other massive European clubs to secure the signing of Eden Hazard from Lille two years ago – so it should be no surprise that the Belgian ranks 4th on £185k per week.
5 Fernando Torres, Chelsea – £175,000-a-week
This could make a few Blues fans wince considering that the Spaniard has largely been considered a flop since his British record £50m switch from Liverpool in 2011 and it’s these huge wages that makes moving Torres on difficult.
6 Sergio Aguero (Manchester City)£150,000-a-week
Clinical forward Sergio Aguero has penned a new five-year deal at Manchester City in the coming days, which is also worth £150k per week – making him the 6th highest earner.
7 Diego Costa (Chelsea)£150,000-a-week
Also earning £150k a week at Stamford Bridge is Fabregas’ fellow new signing Diego Costa, with the former Atletico Madrid powerhouse ranking at 7th.
8 Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea)£150,000-a-week
The new Chelsea midfielder, formerly of Barcelona, has signed a contract worth £150k per week at Stamford Bridge, putting him 8th on the list.
9 Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal)£140,000-a-week
New Arsenal winger Alexis Sanchez has also signed a deal at the Emirates Stadium worth £140k a week, putting him 9th on the list.
10. David Silva, Manchester City – £140,000-a-week
Has recently extended his stay at the Etihad Stadium by a further five years and having created more chances in the league since his 2010 arrival from Valencia than any other player, this seems thoroughly deserved.
