Today, we celebrate a remarkable milestone, one that underscores the power of dedication, vision, and transformative leadership. Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, has announced the induction of the illustrious Professor RD Abubakre into its prestigious Hall of Fame. This recognition is not merely a celebration of an individual but a testament to the enduring impact of a life devoted to excellence, service, and nation-building.
Professor RD Abubakre’s journey is one of aspiration and achievement. A First-Class graduate in Arabic Language and Literature from the University of Ibadan, he exemplified academic brilliance early in his career. His scholarly pursuit continued at the renowned School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, where he earned his PhD as a Commonwealth Scholar, completing it in record time. His academic journey set a precedent for excellence, marking him as a trailblazer committed to pushing boundaries.
As Vice-Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Professor Abubakre’s visionary leadership reshaped the institution’s trajectory. He spearheaded architectural and infrastructural advancements, laying the foundation for a vibrant academic community. More importantly, under his stewardship, the university achieved the crucial milestone of Federal Government approval and National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation, elevating its stature in Nigeria’s higher education landscape.
Beyond administrative excellence, Professor Abubakre’s legacy is deeply rooted in his dedication to intellectual empowerment. As Dean of Arts at the University of Ilorin, he revitalised the faculty, enhancing its national and global standing. Over the years, his mentorship has inspired countless students, many of whom now occupy key leadership roles in academia, government, and industry. His enduring commitment to nurturing talent embodies the highest ideals of education as a transformative force.
His contributions extended far beyond the lecture halls. As Chairman of the Board of Governors at Ila Orangun College of Education, he championed reforms that modernised infrastructure, uplifted staff welfare, and prioritised holistic student development. His tenure reflected a leader who understands the power of education to shape societies and change lives.
Professor Abubakre’s service to humanity is further exemplified by his role as Federal Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission, where he worked tirelessly to promote justice and create opportunities for many. A recipient of the prestigious DAAD Fellowship in Germany, his international engagements and contributions to nation-building have inspired a generation to dream boldly and act courageously.
As Al-Hikmah University prepares to induct him into its Hall of Fame on 8th January 2025, this moment resonates as a beacon of hope and inspiration. It is a call for all of us to embrace the values Professor Abubakre embodies—visionary leadership, unyielding integrity, and a commitment to leaving the world better than we found it.
