EMOSIM, a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) backed by EMO MEDIA Ltd, announced today that it has entered into a partnership with TATA Communications Services (“Tata Communciations”) to provide telecommunications and connectivity services to the Nigerian market.
As part of its entry into Nigeria, EMOSIM will roll out its first product, the first travel eSIM catering to Nigerian outbound travelers, in Q2 2025. Unlike using a local SIM while abroad, users will be exempt from roaming charges and will only pay for competitively priced data bundles. Coverage footprint will include frequently traveled countries by Nigerians including the UK, US, and Canada.
By partnering with TATA Communications Services, a global leader in connectivity solutions, EMOSIM will use the best in class MVNO technology infrastructure to provide unmatched network reliability and seamless user experience. This collaboration underscores a shared vision for digital inclusion and technological advancement, aligning with Nigeria’s commitment to innovation in telecommunications.
Key features of Tata Communications’ MVNO platform are:
● Cloud-based IT platform
● Digital onboarding and eKYC
● Real-time customer experiences
● Interoperability
“In alignment with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Nigerian government’s digitization initiatives, MVNOs act as catalysts to increase access to technology and drive prosperity. At EMO Group, we are dedicated to supporting this mission,” said Jimmy Eboma, EMO Group Chairman.
Commenting on the market opportunity, Karn Gulati, EMOSIM CEO said, “The MVNO licenses were introduced to reach the underserved market and ensure that the smartphone revolution does not leave any Nigerian behind. With Tata Communications as our strategic partners, we can fast-track digital adoption in Nigeria. The travel segment alone is incredibly promising: more than 1.2 million Nigerians travel out every year, making the travel eSIM an ideal launch product.”
Commenting on the potential user base, Aditya Raj Khosla, EMOSIM CCO said, “EMOSIM’s borderless mobile experience is designed to cater to Nigeria’s growing community of frequent travelers, digital entrepreneurs, and remote workers, making global connectivity more accessible than ever before.”
eSIM: At the Vanguard of Telecommunications Technology
eSIMs continue to grow in consumer telecommunications. First developed in 2014, the eSIM is a software version of the physical SIM card. Mobile phone manufacturers embed cards with the secure element (the Embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card – or eUICC) into devices, eliminating the need for a SIM card tray and enabling IOT connections. The eSIM’s many benefits are driving its wide adoption, with the GSMA estimating that by 2028 half of all smartphone connections will be eSIM enabled. It is interoperable and reprogrammable. Customers can switch providers without the need to request, receive and insert a new SIM.
