Wakil Chibok, chairman, board of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, says the hospital is to be upgraded to a teaching hospital status.

Chibok, who disclosed this in Umuahia after the board’s meeting and assessment of facilities on ground at the hospital, said that the board is intensifying efforts to ensure that the hospital is upgraded based on facilities on ground.

“We are impressed with what is happening in FMC, Umuahia, which is aimed at ensuring that it becomes a teaching hospital”, said Chibok.

The board chairman hinted that FMC, Umuahia, parades facilities and manpower more than some of the existing teaching hospitals in the country.

Chibok said that going by what he saw on ground which included: many consultants and seasoned medical doctors and state-of-the-art facilities, it was a waste of fund for Nigerians to travel abroad for medical attention but rather they should come down to FMC, Umuahia, to avail themselves of such opportunities that abound there.

He said the board has mapped out strategies to ensure that the internally generated revenue (IGR) of the hospital is shored up so that more qualified medical doctors would be recruited, adding that one of such strategies includes enlightenment campaign to members of the public, informing them of the need for them to patronise the hospital, where charges are very moderate.
