Getting students early enough to understand and practice lessons on the issue of financial management is pivotal to the development of the next generation of leaders in the country.

It is against this backdrop that Bestman Games, the exclusive distributor in Africa with the rights to produce ‘local’ editions of Monopoly, the world famous board game owned by Hasbro recently hosted in Lagos the 1st Annual City of Lagos Edition Monopoly Tournament between King’s College and Queen’s College.

The maiden edition of the tournament held at the Terra kulture, Victoria Island, Lagos presented an opportunity for the organisers and sponsors to present some basic lessons in resource management by educating participating students, about the importance of financial literacy and the encouragement of personal financial responsibility from an early age.

Chukwuka Monye, managing partner, Cuici Consulting, while speaking at the event said there are plans to organise several tournament after this. According to him, “There is a world monopoly tournament and we are going to have series of tournaments like this where all the winners will come together and compete to become the representative for Nigeria in the world for monopoly.”

On what informed the choice of schools that participated, Monye revealed that King’s and Queen’s Colleges are featured on the monopoly game, so the organisers decided the two schools compete among themselves.

“Monopoly game is an interesting game that is not only restricted to students we are only starting off with students because ultimately, we would like to get a good spread of individuals and that will be a strong tool that will bring families together,” he said.

The City of Lagos Edition was supported by First Bank of Nigeria plc, GTBank plc, the Lagos State Government and Stanbic IBTC Pensions Managers Limited and witnessed the coming together of students, teachers, and a special guest appearance of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the CBN governor.

At the end of the tournament, Habib Rabiu of King’s College emerged winner and was presented with a sum of One Million Naira (N1,000,000) by Sola David Borha, MD, Stanbic IBTC plc.
