As part of its efforts to strengthen the education sector and offer students an opportunity to achieve their educational needs, ALSCON, a leading, global aluminum producer located in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria has announce the launch of its annual Scholarship Programme.

The scholarship called ALSCON Smelter was set up in 2009 with the main objective of providing financial support to local students of the Ikot Abasi LGA as well as its neighboring areas.

Stanislav Kruglyashov, managing director of the ALSCON plant while speaking at the Scholarship Programme’s launch recently said the company’s investment into the sphere of education is vital because education plays an important role in the life of Ikot Abasi LGA and in the region’s neighbouring communities. “We believe that by supporting local students we are making a contribution to the education and training of high-quality staff for our plant as well,” he said.

The RUSAL-ALSCON scholarship programme is focused on improving the standards of education in the Niger Delta and is highly appreciated by the leaders and members of the traditional communities of the region and especially by the students and their parents.

“ALSCON attaches importance to work with traditional communities and will continue to provide them with comprehensive support. Special attention will be paid to projects that address critical social needs of local communities,” he said.

In 2013, the programme plans to grant scholarships to students from communities from Ikot Abasi, Mkpat Enin, Eastern Obolo, and Oruk Anam in the Akwa Ibom state as well as to neighboring communities of Opobo/Nkoro and Andoni in the Rivers state.

During the years of existence of the scholarship programme, between 2009 and 2012, more than 180 local students have received financial support from the plant.

Beneficiaries of the programme are selected in line with specific criteria and requirements of the Scholarship Programme Organising Committee, comprising members of ALSCON’s senior management, as well as having to pass preliminary tests.
