Lagos State government has approved N1.4 billion to pay compensation for properties it has demolished to create right of way for ongoing roads construction, reconstruction, expansion and dualisation in some parts of the state.
In the next few weeks, the state will be paying out the N1.4 billion to affected property owners, bringing relief and new meaning to their lives. The amount comprises N1,245,678,602.00 and N203,352,995.00 for the Agege Pen Cinema Flyover/Ramps and Irede/Abule-Osun reconstruction/dualisation projects, respectively.
Following the provisions of the Land Use Act 1978, which is the enabling Law for the revocation of Certification of Occupancy (C of O), and payment of compensation thereof in the country, the affected properties have been promptly revoked, their enumeration completed and compensation process/payment approved.
Yetunde Onabule, special adviser to the governor on urban development, confirmed in a statement obtained by BusinessDay that the state’s Lands Bureau had carried out reconnaissance survey and detailed enumeration of over 123 properties/claimants affected by the Pen Cinema flyover and ramps project and this includes residential, commercial, retail, petrol filling stations (PFS) and religious users, while over 70 of such have been enumerated and captured for the reconstruction/dualisation of Irede/Abule-Osun Road.
Onabule disclosed that processing of payment of compensation further to the detailed enumeration exercise/data analysis had been done on other acquired/revoked properties in other areas, including Orile/Badagry Road expansion, Isawo Road in Ikorodu, Epe Road expansion project (phase II), Igbogbo Baiyeku, Lagos Airport Road, Free Trade Zone Resettlement Land, Lekki Coastal and Adiyan waterworks Phase II.
According to Onabule, the state government urges affected residents where these exercises are on-going to speed up their verification processes, as the government is ready to commence payment within the next few weeks, enjoining all affected property owners to forward the required details/documents, which should include their bank details and BVN number.
While appreciating the state government for this gesture, she also commended the state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode for approving the removal of encumbrances and construction of a precast/pretested concrete dual carriage flyover and ramps at the Agege Pen Cinema.
This is aimed at alleviating the perennial traffic gridlock encountered at intersections by commuters around Agege, Oba Ogunji, Agunbiade, Old Abeokuta Road, Oko–Oba and Ipaja road and environs.
“This will help reduce travel time for people within this corridor with a multiplier effect of elongating their lifespan and improvement on overall economic activities in the area and Lagos in general”, she said.

She added that Ambode also approved the construction of roads, re–construction of dilapidated roads, as well as expansion / dualisation of already existing Irede/ Abule-Osun Road, off Lagos–Badagry Expressway, with the conclusion of acquisition process, enumeration of the properties along its right of way.
