Construction activities upbeat as govt commits to completing ongoing projects

Real estate firms cut logistics, other costs to survive harsh economy

Construction activities are upbeat on about 16 on-going projects in different parts of Lagos state as the state government has assured that it is committed to completing these projects no matter the stage of completion each of them may be.

Officials of the state have assured that though the state government is desirous and committed to completing these projects, quality of work on them will never be compromised, adding that the management of these construction processes should be efficient and effective so as to obtain the best value for money.

Office of Works, the government agency responsible for providing most of government facilities has stepped up activities aimed to ensure that these projects are completed on schedule.

Lagos is at the moment rehabilitating and building existing and new government facilities and so far, many schools, hospitals, courts and other public facilities are being rehabilitated by the agency.

With its technical competence in the area of public buildings, the agency  has the duty of ensuring compliance with standards and as a consultant to all ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) of government in the area of public buildings, the agency,  through this function, has helped the government to save millions of naira from construction the cost.

Aside from construction works, the Office is also responsible for the maintenance of many government facilities, including the Secretariat Complex, Staff Quarters and a number of equipment.

This agency is also undertaking the construction of such projects as Science and Technology complex, multi-agency building, multi-storey building; magistrate courts located in Ajegunle, Ogba, Epe, Ikeja, Badagry, and the ongoing project in Igando and Lagos arbitration centre.

In the education sector, Works department has completed Senate Building, Student Union Arcade, Central Library, Faculty of Management Sciences, and 3-in-1 Lecture Theatre, all at the Lagos State University (LASU).

In addition, the office has embarked on the  three-floor building extension on Harvey Road, Health Centre, College of Health Technology, Yaba and renovation of Ayinke House, Ikeja General Hospital just as it involved in the on-going Egan-Igando Housing project.

It was also this  Office that completed the Police Officers Wives Association’s (POWA) Secretariat in Lagos, the  Police Model Area Command, Ilashe, Police Model Area Command, Elemoro in Ibeju-Lekki local government area, and the Police Model Area Command, Idimu.

 Other projects in which it has/is involved include Oyingbo Market, Igando Relief Camp and Agege Stadium, Abesan Sport Centre while in the area tourism,  the office has embarked on new projects, including a 48-bed hotel, Fire Service Station, Lekki and Tourism Development, Badagry.

Through this office, public buildings are maintained and sustained for longevity and it ensures that state government properties are not wasted through boarding of its plants and equipment. Besides, through its intermediary role with electricity distribution companies and other telecom operators, the department ensures that state government’s bills are settled promptly as and when due.
