Updated: Akeredolu wins Ondo guber poll with 292,830 votes

The Ondo State governor and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Saturday’s governorship election in the state, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has been declared winner of the election.

Akeredolu was declared winner after polling the highest number of votes in the election and having scored 25 percent votes in all the 18 local government areas of Ondo State.

With this victory, Akeredolu has earned a second and final four-year term as governor of Ondo State.

The APC candidate polled a total of 292,830 votes, winning in 15 out of 18 local government areas of the state; his closest rival, Eyitayo Jegede of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), polled 177,003 votes, while Agboola Ajayi, deputy governor and governorship candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), polled 65,423 votes to come a distant third.

Announcing the winner of the election, the Chief Returning Officer, Idowu Olayinka, who is Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, said, “That Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu of APC, secured the highest votes among the 17 contestants.

“He scored 25 percent in all the 18 local government areas. The different between him and the candidate of PDP, Eyitayo Jedege is higher than the number of canceled votes.”

According to Olayinka, the total number of valid votes is 572,745, rejected votes 18,448, and cancelled votes 16,709.

Olayinka said, “Subsequently, having certified with the requirement of the law, I hereby declare Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu as the winner and hereby return elected.”

Meanwhile, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Rufus Akeju, has said the collection of Certificate of Return will be done on Tuesday at the INEC Office, Akure by 10am.
