Tribunal upholds Douye Diri’s victory as Bayelsa Governor

The Bayelsa State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja has affirmed the re-election of Douye Diri as governor.

On Monday, the three-member panel, led by Justice Adekunle Adeleye, dismissed the petition filed by Timipre Sylva, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate.

Sylva and the APC had alleged widespread irregularities and vote rigging in the November 2023 governorship election.

The tribunal, however, concluded that the petitioners failed to present credible evidence to substantiate their allegations against the election’s outcome.

Justice Adeleye, delivering the lead judgment, emphasized that Sylva and the APC did not meet the burden of proof required to demonstrate that the November 2023 election was conducted with widespread irregularities and vote rigging.
