Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), says the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is now united and free of internal factions following a recent Supreme Court judgment.
Speaking on Thursday at a press briefing at his residence in Guzape, Abuja, Wike said the apex court’s decision had effectively ended disputes over alleged parallel leadership structures within the party.
He dismissed suggestions that the Supreme Court validated the suspension of the PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, insisting that no such issue was before the court for determination.
“Today, the Supreme Court has brought an end to the so-called factions in the PDP. There is no more faction in the party. There is only one PDP,” he said.
Wike explained that the court dismissed appeals challenging earlier decisions of lower courts, thereby affirming the legality of the party’s national convention and its current leadership structure.
According to him, attempts by aggrieved members to overturn the convention outcomes failed at all judicial levels.
“The Supreme Court has validated our convention and set aside all claims to any parallel structure. The PDP has come to stay as one united party,” he said.
The minister also urged political actors to adhere strictly to constitutional and electoral rules governing party operations, warning against actions that could undermine internal democracy.
“The fact that you occupy a position does not mean you can act outside the law. There are rules guiding party activities, and those rules must be followed,” he said.
Wike further downplayed the political weight of some members who left the party during the crisis, describing them as lacking electoral value, while noting that the door remained open for reconciliation.
“Those who left are not electoral assets; they are liabilities. However, those who left out of uncertainty may reconsider and return now that the situation is clear,” he added.
On opposition coalition talks, Wike said he would not support alliances lacking clear national interest or constructive purpose.
“We do not believe in opposition for opposition’s sake. Our approach is constructive, not destructive,” he said.
He maintained that recent court decisions in political disputes underscore the importance of due process, urging aggrieved parties to seek redress through the judiciary.
Wike expressed confidence that the PDP remains Nigeria’s leading opposition party, capable of offering credible alternatives in the democratic space.
“The PDP is stable, united and ready to play its role effectively. What has happened is a victory for the rule of law and internal democracy,” he said.
