Kano: Yusuf heads to Supreme Court after Appeal Court sacking

Kano eyes Indian market, power projects to revive industries

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Friday vowed to challenge an Appeal Court ruling that sacked him from office and declared Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the March 18 election.

Yusuf, who ran on the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) platform, told reporters in Kano that he had instructed his legal team to appeal the ruling at the Supreme Court.

“I have instructed my legal team to appeal the judgment of the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court,” Yusuf said. “We believe that the Supreme Court will uphold the mandate that the people of Kano gave me.”

The Appeal Court ruling came after the Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sacked Yusuf in September, ruling that the NNPP had failed to prove that the election was conducted freely and fairly.

The APC welcomed the Appeal Court ruling, saying it was a victory for democracy.

“We are happy with the judgment of the Appeal Court,” said Abdullahi Ganduje, National Chairman of the APC. “This is a victory for democracy and the people of Kano State.”

Ganduje said the APC was ready to meet the NNPP at the Supreme Court.

“If they want to go to the Supreme Court, we will meet them,” Ganduje said. “We are confident that we will win.”
