The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Tinubu over his recent remark on the state of democracy in Nigeria, questioning his democratic credentials.

The criticism followed the President’s statement during an Iftar (breaking of fast) with the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), where he responded to opposition concerns over the Electoral Act 2026 Amendment.

The President reportedly told opposition parties to stop complaining and prepare to meet the ruling party at the polls, adding that “the game is sweet only when you are winning.”

But in a statement on Thursday, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, said the President’s remark trivialised governance and mocked the essence of democracy.

According to Abdullahi, describing governance as a “game” at a time when millions of Nigerians are grappling with insecurity, unemployment and widespread poverty raises serious questions about the President’s democratic credentials.

“Democracy is not a contest to be enjoyed by those in power; it is a system of governance built on accountability, respect for institutions and responsibility to the people,” the statement said.

The party argued that the Electoral Act amendment appeared designed to weaken opposition parties and tilt the political playing field in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The ADC further accused the administration of focusing on political advantage rather than addressing the country’s pressing challenges.

It questioned who exactly was “winning” in the so-called political game when communities are under attack, graduates struggle to find jobs and many families cannot afford basic necessities.

The party also warned that governance must never be trivialised, stressing that the presidency carries a heavy responsibility that requires competence, accountability and respect for the Nigerian people.

“Nigeria does not need a gamer-in-chief. The country needs a leader who understands the weight of the office he holds and the burden of improving the lives of citizens,” the party said.
