Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday announced his endorsement of Obafemi Hamzat, his deputy, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election. The decision followed a closed-door meeting at Lagos House in Marina, where Hamzat officially declared his intention to run for governor before members of the State Executive Council and prominent party leaders.
The meeting was attended by members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including Musiliu Obanikoro, the former minister of state for defence, and Ganiyu Solomon. Sanwo-Olu told journalists that the endorsement reflects a consensus among the stakeholders present, adding that Hamzat is well-prepared and capable of leading Lagos State.

“He is a man who has worked with me at the highest level of integrity, loyalty, commitment, support, and so I feel personally honoured and privileged that he has given me this honour to inform me,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, whom he credited with the discovery of both himself and Hamzat, as well as their effective working relationship.
Sanwo-Olu noted that the President’s long-term vision was being manifested through the current political alignment. Describing Hamzat as ready for leadership from the outset, the governor stated that his deputy deserved the opportunity to lead the state.

Early alignment within the ruling party
The governor characterised the meeting as a consultative process involving both government officials and party leaders. He noted that the endorsement followed a broad agreement, describing the gathering as a “warm family meeting” where the decision was unanimous.
This development signals an early alignment within the ruling All Progressives Congress in Lagos. As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, the move provides a clear direction for the party’s succession plan in Nigeria’s commercial hub.
