Charles Odii, creating social change, making a difference

Biography

Charles is passionate about helping people discover and pursue entrepreneurship. As a Media and fashion entrepreneur, he is always curious and adventurous. Charles has spent much of his career focused on how to create social change and making a difference in the world. Whether it’s developing a new approach to online education, understanding the science of competency-based learning, creating new tools and resources, or helping build a business. He has strong capabilities in formulating corporate and marketing strategies as well as providing solutions using technology and innovation. Prior to founding SME100Nigeria, Charles spent five years working as a media consultant to the Delta and Imo State governments in Nigeria. During that time, he served as a media consultant to the Internal Revenue Boards in both states.

He also worked as a business development consultant for Rocket Internet, and a management consultant for RED Media Africa. Through his experience in government as a consultant, he saw how interconnected the different systems of social policy, the economy and education really are – and the overarching role that the economy plays in shaping the quality of our lives. Through SME100Nigeria, he hopes to help discover young entrepreneurs and help to unleash a new generation of business leaders into the world. Charles has a BSc in Management and Information Systems from Covenant University, an MSc in Media and Communication from the Pan Atlantic University and is currently a PhD student at the School of Media and Communication in Nigeria.

Impact

Through SME100Nigeria, we have successfully helped grow over 100 youth owned Nigeria Small and Medium scale businesses, strategically positioning them as key players in their industries. I am very committed to this, for me, it is a matter of vision and it is clearly in line to tackle unemployment and underemployment that have hindered the capacity of many to do work and earn an income in a nation like Nigeria, with millions of multitalented people and limitless opportunities. I am fixing this problem, one new skill here, one more knowledgeable person there, a new business start-up and poverty is out the door, and there is no telling how many people would be impacted by that one business started as a result of these trainings.

SME100 Nigeria visited 20 schools and youth communities in Nigeria with a view to educating young students on how to excel by leveraging on opportunities, creativity and innovation. SME100Nigeria taught thousands of young students on financial literacy and this is a series of capacity development activities aimed at equipping young students with financial literacy skills; improving their understanding of how money is managed within the society and helping them begin to cultivate a saving culture as well as the importance of starting early.
