“I am a workaholic. I am very restless, and I am always looking for good work. I don’t act for the heck of it; I do it because I love it.” Rajkummar Rao, an Indian actor.
Niger State, the largest state in Nigeria by landmass, is endowed with vast arable land, making it a prime hub for agriculture. Beyond its agricultural wealth, the state is home to Kainji Dam, Nigeria’s primary source of electricity, along with other dams—Shiroro Dam, Jebba Dam, and the recently completed Zungeru Dam—all contributing to power generation. These assets rightfully earn the state its fitting moniker: “The Power State.”
However, the power that Niger State wields extends beyond electricity; it has produced two Nigerian military heads of state and boasts the historic town of Zungeru, which served as the capital of the British Protectorate of Northern Nigeria from 1902 until 1916, two years after the country’s amalgamation. It was in this state that Mungo Park was said to have ‘discovered’ the River Niger. We shouldn’t forget, also, that Dr Nnamdi Azikwe, the first indigenous Governor General of Nigeria (and later the first President), was also born of Igbo parents in Zungeru. Niger State is not just a powerhouse in name; it is a land of historical and economic significance. Yet, before 2023, Niger State remained largely absent from national discourse on indices of economic growth and development. Across digital platforms and mainstream media, the state barely made the news. It was a region rich in potential but awaiting a transformative leader to awaken its latent greatness and radiance.
As Nigeria embraced democracy in 1999, Umar Bago, the son of Alhaji Mohammed Tekno, born on 22 February 1974 in Minna to a Nupe family of Bida and Lapia origin, was a young banker meticulously crafting his career in the Nigerian financial sector. From the United Bank for Africa to Afribank Plc, and later First City Monument Bank, he honed his expertise in finance. His political journey began in 2011 when he contested and won the Federal House of Representatives seat for the Chanchaga Federal constituency under the platform of Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). While he made impactful contributions as Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Maritime Safety, Education, and Administration, he remained relatively obscure on the national stage. His abortive bid for the Speakership of the 9th National Assembly, however, brought him into the limelight—not out of personal ambition, but as he put it, “to correct the mistake of the party leaders by opinion of zonings.”
Then came 2023—the defining year. Under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Umar Mohammed Bago emerged victorious in the governorship elections. Sworn in on May 29, 2023, he ushered in an era of unparalleled transformation. Niger State roared back to life, earning the new reputation of ‘one week, one project.’ Ever since then, things have never remained the same in Niger State.
Farmer Governor Bago is a man of action, a leader who does not indulge in empty rhetoric but translates vision into tangible outcomes. His work ethic is relentless, and his commitment is strong. A very resolute man. He is a workaholic. He doesn’t act for the heck of work; he works because he loves working. Though not omnipresent, his impact is felt across every town, village, and local government in Niger State. His passion for agriculture is unmistakable. In his own words, “My first priority is to position Niger State as the food basket of Nigeria.” This dedication earned him the title “The Farmer Governor.” However, his vision extends beyond agriculture; he is architecting a new Niger—a state flourishing in agribusiness, infrastructure, governance, and education.
As an education consultant, I have closely observed Governor Bago’s solid commitment to revitalising education. He recognises that no state can achieve true progress without investing in the intellectual capital of its people. Nelson Mandela aptly said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Governor Bago’s administration embodies this philosophy. One of his most groundbreaking achievements is the establishment of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) Teaching Hospital, a project set to redefine medical education and healthcare in Niger State.
His vision for global academic excellence is evident in his initiative to send students to India, Brazil, and Canada for STEM courses, equipping them with international exposure and cutting-edge expertise. Further solidifying his commitment, he has facilitated students’ placements in Chinese universities for MBBS programmes, strengthening the State’s healthcare workforce. In making education accessible, he has approved massive scholarships and bursary awards. In early 2024, he allocated ₦576 million to the State Scholarship Board, followed by an additional ₦2 billion, alleviating financial burdens and opening doors for countless students. “Education is not a privilege, it is a right,” Mandela once declared—a belief that Governor Bago has turned into policy.
Governor Bago’s impact on secondary education is equally remarkable. His administration has embarked on a massive renovation of schools and modernisation efforts to create an optimal learning environment. Technical and vocational education has received significant attention, ensuring students gain industry-relevant skills. John F. Kennedy once remarked, “Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education. The human mind is our fundamental resource.” Recognising this, Governor Bago has prioritised teachers’ welfare, continuous training, and professional development, fostering a motivated teaching workforce.
Beyond academics, Governor Bago is devoted to youth empowerment. His administration has established ICT and digital training hubs specialising in software development, cybersecurity, and data science. Kofi Annan once said, “Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress.” To this end, Governor Bago has provided financial grants, mentorship, and business incubation opportunities, fostering entrepreneurial growth. In the agricultural sector, his empowerment programs encourage youth participation in agribusiness and food production, ensuring sustainable economic development. Recognising the importance of student leadership, he has empowered major student organisations by providing transportation and logistical support. His commitment to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was evident in 2024 when he approved a ₦200,000 bonus for each of the 1,600 corps members in Batch B Stream 1. Additionally, his approval of ₦5 billion for a modern NYSC orientation camp that year underscored his dedication to youth development.
Governor Bago’s vision transcends education and youth development. His administration has achieved remarkable progress in infrastructure, rehabilitating and expanding major roads to enhance trade and connectivity. Rural road networks have been developed, providing essential support to farmers and businesses. Tony Blair aptly stated, “Education is the best economic policy there is.” Governor Bago has seamlessly integrated education with economic growth initiatives. Healthcare has also witnessed significant advancements, with modernised medical facilities, upgraded hospitals, and free healthcare programs for pregnant women, children, and vulnerable populations. “Education promotes equality and lifts people out of poverty,” said Ban Ki-moon. Governor Bago has internalised this philosophy, ensuring access to quality medical care. Security remains a top priority, with strengthened measures implemented to protect lives and property. Community-driven programs fostering peace and unity have further solidified the social fabric of Niger State.
As Farmer Governor Umar Mohammed Bago marks his 51st birthday, his legacy stands as a beacon of bold leadership, innovation, and progress. From revolutionising education to empowering the youth, from enhancing infrastructure to advancing healthcare, his tenure is setting a new governance standard in Nigeria. Now with Governor Bago in charge, Niger State is “The Power State.” May the power never go weak.
Happy 51st Birthday, Your Excellency! May your journey of service and impact continue to inspire generations to come. I wish you love and light!
